Rule 14 — For the Master to Make a Flourish

The application of which Godinho leaves to the Diestros

Source Text

Taking hold of the montante in the manner pointed out in Rule Three, and positioned sideways, move with the left foot to the same side, and play two or three tajos, stepping also to the side, the right foot following, being placed each time ahead of the left — I mean to say ahead as in front of the line of sight. The tajos played, leave the last withdrawn in the air in the form of Rule Nine, with the quillons in front of the face, the arms turned in the manner of an armed reves, and the point of the montante towards the floor. Play a reves standing firm, bending over the right knee. Then, standing firm like this, play a raking tajo, and another tajo rounded above the head in the same time, turning the whole body to the other side on the right foot, in a manner that the face ends up where you had had the back. This turn made, give the same tajos from before in the same order above, finishing with the last tajo withdrawn as said before, then the same reves standing firm, and a raking tajo, manipulating and bending the body, then a tajo turned above the head, armed over the right foot and giving a turn in a manner that the face ends up where you had had the back. In this way, you will understand that that which is done in the first step of this rule is done in all the rest.

Summary

  1. Grip and stance: Take hold of the montante as instructed in Chapter Three and position yourself sideways.
  2. Initial tajos: Step left with the left foot and play two or three tajos, right foot following and placing ahead of the left in the line of sight each time.
  3. Withdraw into position: Leave the last tajo withdrawn in the air with the quillons in front of the face, arms turned in the manner of an armed reves, and the point toward the floor.
  4. Reves on the knee: Play a reves standing firm, bending over the right knee.
  5. Raking tajo and turn: From that same firm position, play a raking tajo, then immediately a tajo rounded above the head, turning the whole body on the right foot so the face ends where the back was.
  6. Repeat: From the new facing, give the same tajos in the same order, withdraw the last, play the reves on the knee, the raking tajo, and the overhead turning tajo. What is done in the first step of this rule is done in all the rest.
